This semester..

The one time I write my blog directly into the website and not on a word document, I get a "beachball of death from my MAC" and lose all my work.  Sorry the post is late! 


This semester went by so quickly! I guess the saying, "Time flies when you are having fun!" hold true!  I have LOVED interning with 3rd grade.  The students took me in and wanted me to stay longer than I could. I have learned so much from my mentor teacher and from my third grade students this semester! I am truly going to miss this group of students.  They have taken me in and made me feel right at home.  I wish I had been with them the previous semester, so I could see an even bigger improvement than the one I have witnessed over the past few months.  Teaching my five day unit plan on a topic I was not familiar with, really helped improve my confidence as a teacher.  Science is not my strongest subject, but I worked hard to make the lessons fun and it paid off.  The students seemed to love the unit, so it really helped improve my confidence in the area.  I was also nervous about working with older students, but they made the experience a breeze.

These past two weeks were CRCT prep week and the beginning of the testing.  I am really glad that I was able to witness this because it was great experience.  I was able to learned about fun ways to review information.  I also was able to witness how stressful the situation is from a teacher’s stand point. I remember how stressful the week was as a student, but now I am able to see how the teacher feels.  I feel for all of them and am looking forward to it being over on Thursday!


I have enjoyed working with this blog.  It has allowed me to not only blog and relieve stress, but I am able to now look back on my previous blogs and laugh at some of the stuff I forgot about.  I also enjoyed looking at my peers' blogs.  It is comforting to know that they are feeling the same way I am: nervous, confused, used at times haha, but also happy to help, excited, and thrilled to see my dreams of becoming a teacher turn into reality!  I am going to miss this group of girls and guys next semester when we are all alone in the "working world" as an intern!

Confused...

I am confused on what we were supposed to blog about last week and this week.  I was under the impression that we did not have a blog post due last week because you cancelled the reading of chapters 16 and 18.  I did not intentionally skip an assignment. I would never do that!

3rd Grade

I loved teaching my unit plan to third graders! Last year, I was in Kindergarten, and the unit plan did not go exactly as we planned due to time issues and just the content with such a young age.  This year was completely different! I was able to show videos, do projects, use presentations, complete a writers workshop and have an open discussion with my students! The students seemed to LOVE learning about the Ocean and Coastal lines of Georgia.  They seemed to absorb the information and had lots of questions to further their knowledge.  I was afraid to teach third grade because they are much older than what I am used to, but it went great! My confidence has increased and I am happy to create lesson plans that are more challenging. I also enjoyed reading my students papers that they completed during the writing workshop.  All in All, the week went great and I had so much fun! I cant wait to have a classroom of my own!

The Writing Workshop

I am only half way through my internship in third grade and so far I am loving it!  I did not know if I would enjoy third grade as much as I have previously enjoyed the younger grades.  However, it has turned out to be a wonderful experience.  I can really see myself teaching this grade now.  The students are at that point where they are reading to learn new and exciting things, but they still want help and advice every now and then.  It is a great feeling to know that I can be a service to both teaching and helping with life lessons!


I have had the privilege to gain a lot of writing workshop experience throughout this semester.  My mentor teacher is very good at incorporating writing into all of the standards.  So far, I have witnessed the students writing a narrative, persuasive, and an information text.  She also allows for the students to use a clip board and sit scattered throughout the room! I love this time because I get to see the students really think about what they are writing down.  My favorite experience was watching the students participate in free writing time.  Three boys passes around a piece of paper and wrote a combined story about ghosts.  They would each write a sentence and then pass it to the next student.  When they were finished, they brought it to my teacher and she read it aloud to the class in fun and creative voices.  The students, who do not normally like writing time, were so impressed with the positive reactions from their peers.  You could tell they were really proud of themselves! It was an exciting moment to witness. 


I am still very nervous to conduct my own writing workshop lesson plans, but I feel more confident as the weeks go on.  Throughout my week in the classroom, I plan to implement a writing assessment on one student and I plan do do a writing workshop about a trip to the beach! Wish me luck!

This chapter seemed to be very helpful with the planning aspect of writer’s workshop.  It provided me with two examples of how the writer’s workshop would be split up over the year: one for k-1 and another for upper grade levels.  Some lessons took a week and others took up to a month.  It was nice to see the varying list because it reassured me with the fact that it is a lenient time frame.  You can postpone activities or start them earlier based on how the student’s react to the subject.  My favorite topic suggested was “ways of reading texts like writers, developing a sense of craft and genre in writing” (WW, 132.” This topic can be very challenging for students and may produce some frustration; however, if presented in the right way it can be very fun.  It is a good time to review punctuation and how writers speak to their audience.  My favorite subtopic was “a study of how writers write without using words: looking at punctuation, spacing, layout, fonts, and so on in written texts” (WW, 132).  This reminded me of the book you read in class a few weeks ago.  I cannot remember the exact name of the book, but it showed the text in different ways other than the standard left to right, paragraph form.  I think it would be fun to read this book and then have a class discussion about this topic.
